At Southwest ISD, Cynthia Cuellar brings curiosity and creativity into her classroom through real world learning experiences that spark wonder and possibility. Driven by a passion for science and sustainability, she looks for ways to help students connect what they learn in class to everyday life. Her inspiration for innovation came from an unexpected place—a visit to a hydroponics exhibit where she saw food growing in ways that challenged everything her students thought they knew about agriculture.

That inspiration grew into The Hydro Garden, a Firstmark Foundation funded project that introduced students to hydroponic food production right in the classroom. With support from the Foundation, Cynthia was able to purchase hydroponic towers, stand alone growing systems, lighting, nutrients, and seedlings, transforming abstract science concepts into a living, breathing lab. Students now explore how lettuce can grow without soil as they measure water levels, monitor growth, and learn about sustainability, food security, and environmental responsibility in a hands on way.

The impact reaches more than 500 students, who eagerly check on their plants—smelling, touching, and even tasting the results of their work. Beyond scientific skills, the project empowers students with the knowledge that they can grow their own food and think creatively about solving real world challenges. Through The Hydro Garden, Cynthia has cultivated not only healthy plants, but also confidence, curiosity, and a lasting connection to learning.
