Rebecca Jimenez serves the Harlandale ISD community from the heart of the campus library—a space she sees as more than shelves and books, but as a shared gateway to curiosity and possibility. With access to every student and staff member on campus, she is deeply committed to making learning equitable, engaging, and future focused. Her vision centers on giving students opportunities they may not otherwise have, especially when it comes to emerging technologies that spark creativity and problem solving.

That revelation manifested in the Makerspace in the Library project, made possible through the Firstmark Foundation education grant. Rebecca brought a 3D printer into the library, transforming it into a hands on makerspace where students can imagine, design, and create. The printer allows learners to turn abstract concepts into tangible objects—whether modeling scientific ideas, exploring geometry, recreating historical artifacts, or building original prototypes. Placing the tool in the library ensures it can be used across grade levels, subject areas, clubs, and special projects, making innovation accessible to all.

The impact is campus wide. Over 500 students now have exposure to 3D printing and design thinking, building skills in creativity, perseverance, and collaboration. As classes and clubs integrate the makerspace into their learning, the library becomes a hub for innovation—one that encourages students to see themselves not just as consumers of information, but as creators with ideas worth bringing to life.
