Oftentimes, students in special education face educational obstacles and unpredictable behavioral patterns, which can hinder their production in the classroom. Sensory labs were created to help get them back on track. Whenever they feel a need to blow off some steam, or perhaps regain focus, these rooms are here for them.
Valerie Valencia, educator at Compass Rose Public Schools, wanted to build a sensory room for her special education students, helping those with autism and other learning disabilities. Thanks to Power of the Dollar® members, she was awarded a $1,000 grant in December 2025 for her “Inclusive Sensory Room: Supporting All Students’ Needs in Special Education” project idea, which she then used the grant funds to purchase sensory items to fill out the classroom, such as a fiber optic waterfall, podium benches with cushioned seating, bubble tube, and more!
“The inspiration really came from my students,” said Valencia. “I see their potential every day—their curiosity, their creativity, and their hunger to learn more. But I also saw the barriers they faced, especially for my special education students who often need a different approach or additional support to thrive. Applying for the Firstmark grant was a way to bridge that gap. I wanted to give all my students, regardless of their learning needs, something that would ignite their passion and help them believe in themselves. The grant felt like a chance to bring dreams within reach.”
This type of initiative addresses critical needs for these students who are up against substantial barriers that can result in poor academic performance. By adding the sensory resources, Ms. Valencia’s students are now engaged in individual learning plans, specialized teaching strategies, and assistive technology to not only foster an all-inclusive learning environment, but to also help build their social skills and give them peace of mind. When you step into her class, you see it. Students are excited to dive right into the subjects being covered—and to have some fun!
“The kids are more engaged, more confident, and more connected to each other,” she said. “My special education students, in particular, have really flourished. Tools and experiences funded by the grant helped meet them where they are and gave them a voice in the classroom. Some who were once hesitant to participate are now leading activities or showing others how to do something. It’s not just about what they’ve learned—it’s about how they’ve grown as people. The grant didn’t just fund a project; it gave these kids a sense of possibility, and for many, a place where they truly feel seen and capable and free to be who they truly are.”
