Education Grant WinnerAngela López-García

When you’re learning a new language, it’s not too often you really absorb what that culture has to offer. For students, because they have that leeway to immerse themselves into that world at a young age, there are incredible long-term benefits that will come out of it, including a better understanding of not just the vernacular but the rich history behind it.

Angela Lopez-Garcia StudentsAngela López-García, educator at Alamo Heights High School, envisioned an intricate project opportunity for her students to explore Spanish studies through the lens of artistry and design, developing their knowledge of how architecture can be reflective in societal values. Thanks to Power of the Dollar® members, she was awarded a $1,000 grant in December 2025 for her “Exploring Architecture through Gaudí-Inspired Models” project idea, which she then used the grant funds to purchase an abundance of modeling clay, cardboard, mosaic supplies, paint and paintbrushes, glue, and other decorative elements!

“I feel so honored,” said López-García. “I wanted my students to have the opportunity to create freely without feeling pressure of something that they needed, not having inspiration for themselves, and something that would carry them into the second semester beyond what we have been doing. Funding is really a struggle for all schools.”

Constructing art projects that were inspired by Antoni Gaudí, a famed architect from Spain with an array of uniquely modernized designs, Ms. López-García’s students spent weeks both reading up on his portfolio and speaking in Spanish, further broadening their skills in the language. Through this hands-on experience, students were able to foster a knowledge of critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration, all while strengthening their appreciation for the culture. Most of all, her students were given a chance to do an exercise that doesn’t come around to most—and they had fun the whole way.

“When I introduced the project to them, they loved it,” she said. “We wanted to expand and deepen our understanding of the cultural connection. Their grade doesn’t come from how fabulous their project was, but from their work that went into it, their depth of understanding, and so forth. The students have been great!”
