Tips to Avoid Fraud
If you're starting to repair busted pipes, roofs, walls and floors due to water damage, here are some tips to protect you from scams and shady contractors.
- Get more than one bid.
- Research the contractor on the Better Business Bureau and ask for references
- Get three bids to determine who might be making false promises
- Read every document before signing.
- Do not sign an incomplete contract or with blank spaces. Scammers will later fill in those blanks with higher costs.
- Beware of misleading language. Make sure the contract lists the materials they'll use.
- Don't pay up front.
- Be wary of out-of-town contractors or if you're asked for a large down payment.
- Don't waive your deductible.
- Skip offers from contractors who ask you to waive your insurance deductible. It's against the law.
- Report unlawful requests to the Texas Attorney General at 800-621-0508.
