Firstmark Credit Union Wins Prestigious Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Award

September 10, 2013, San Antonio, TX--  Firstmark Credit Union has received a 2013 Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Community Service Award for their support of Literacy San Antonio and the SAReads program. This award, sponsored by the Cornerstone Credit Union League, recognizes credit unions for their involvement and achievements in community projects and activities.
“Credit unions have a strong commitment to the communities they serve. As not-for-profit financial cooperatives, our focus is on people; not profit,” says Cornerstone Credit Union League CEO Dick Ensweiler. Firstmark Credit Union has been a sponsor of SAReads since 2010 when they, along with other community partners, hosted the first annual Summer Book Drive. Now in its fourth year, the book drive has collected over 200,000 books.

“The initial book drive was so successful we didn’t have the capacity to store and process all of the books collected,” said Pamela Toman, Executive Director of SAReads, adding, “That’s a good problem to have.”

At that point, Firstmark not only offered the use of 2,300 square feet of space to be used as the SAReads Book Bank, but also provided funds for shelving, as well as a team of employee volunteers to help sort, label, and prepare the books for distribution.

“We are pleased to support SAReads and their efforts to increase literacy rates in our community,” said Leon Ewing, CEO Firstmark Credit Union. “Increasing literacy has a ripple effect; it will improve high-school graduation and college acceptance rates, which will lead to a better-educated workforce, and ultimately a stronger economy.”

“Firstmark Credit Union has demonstrated their commitment to being part of the solution of a social concern in their community and their efforts have earned them a Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Award. We applaud them for their success,” said Ensweiler.
