Academic Planners to Educators

In the Community

Firstmark Credit Union is committed to building lasting relationships in the community and we work hard to make a meaningful difference. Credit union employees contributed both their time and talents to multiple charities, such as SA Reads, SA Youth, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Friends of the Park, Lighthouse for the Blind, Family Endeavors, and more.

The credit union also continued a long tradition of community service by supporting CHRISTUS Santa Rosa’s Children’s Hospital of San Antonio. Since 1986, the credit union’s membership and employees have given close to $750,000 to the charity and have consistently outperformed peers in the amount of dollars raised.

Student Aid Saturdays
In 2013, Firstmark was a key sponsor of Student Aid Saturdays. This free program ran from January through May with the goal providing students and their families one-on-one help (in English and Spanish) to complete the FAFSA or TAFSA forms. Firstmark employees attended training and volunteered on Saturdays to support this city-wide effort. The program was a partnership with SA2020, The Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce, San Antonio Education Partnership, and GenerationTX San Antonio.

“Filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form increases a student’s likelihood of attending college by 350%. This is why this program is vital to our city.” – San Antonio Chamber President and CEO Richard Perez.

Scholarships Awarded
Firstmark Credit Union awarded fifteen, $1,000 scholarships to local high school seniors from the Frank Price Cunningham & Helen Shipman Cunningham Memorial Scholarship Fund program.

Giving Back to Educators
In addition to giving out 81,000 academic planners to educators in 2013, the credit union also gave ten, $500 awards to teachers to support innovation in the classroom. Funds were used to build vertical gardens, buy video editing equipment, conduct “Artist Chemistry” experiments and more.

In 2013, Firstmark was recognized with a Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Community Service Award for support of Literacy San Antonio and the SAReads program. This award, sponsored by the Cornerstone Credit Union League, recognizes credit unions for their involvement and achievements in community projects and activities. Firstmark Credit Union has been a sponsor of SAReads since 2010 when they, along with other community partners, hosted the first annual Summer Book Drive. Now in its fourth year, the book drive has collected over 200,000 books for distribution to agencies and organization that help fight illiteracy in our community.

“Credit unions have a strong commitment to the communities they serve. As not-for-profit financial cooperatives, our focus is on people; not profit.” – Cornerstone Credit Union League CEO Dick Ensweiler.
