2007 Frank Price Cunningham & Helen Shipman Cunningham Scholarship Recipients
Firstmark Credit Union is pleased to announce
the recipients of the 2006 Frank Price Cunningham & Helen Shipman
Cunningham Scholarship! Each of these ten scholars will receive
$1,000 to be used towards their college education.
Firstmark Credit Union uses the Piper Scholars
Committee for the Bexar County Scholarship Clearing House of the
Minnie Stevens Piper Foundation to assist in the scholarship selection
process. Composed of local educators, the Piper Scholars Committee
for the Bexar County Scholarship Clearing House was established
in 1965 to serve as a liaison between the applicant and the scholarship
donors and currently assists seventy-five organizations in their
selection process. They are well recognized in the community and
provide valuable expertise for this important responsibility.
Firstmark Credit Union established the Scholarship
Fund in honor of Frank Price Cunningham and Helen Shipman Cunningham
who served the Credit Union as president and vice president respectively.
Individuals wanting to make a tax deductible contribution to the
Frank Price Cunningham & Helen Shipman Cunningham Scholarship
may do so by making their checks payable to the San Antonio Area
Foundation and mailing it to Firstmark Credit Union Scholarship
Fund, PO Box 701650, San Antonio, TX 78270-1650. Please indicate
on the check that your contribution is for the Frank Price Cunningham
& Helen Shipman Cunningham Scholarship to assure proper credit.

Melissa Appel
As a senior at Lutheran High School of San Antonio, Melissa
Appel will graduate as valedictorian and a National Merit Commended Scholar. She has served as a Spiritual Life leader, class president, and president of National Honor Society. Miss Appel has been editor of the school newspaper for three years and has participated in and won several academic contests, including TAPPS Calculator State runner-up. For four years, she played on the varsity tennis team, volunteered at school auctions and Vacation Bible School, and actively participated in her church youth group. Miss Appel plans to study animal science at Texas A&M University to earn her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine.

David Casso
David Anthony Casso is a senior at McCollum High School. He is involved with numerous extracurricular activities both in school and throughout the community. Mr. Casso served as student council president for four years and is the vice-president of the National Honor Society. Other activities include Business Professionals of America, Academic UIL, KLRN Community Advisory Board, McCollum High School Brand-It! Magazine, the UT Health Science Center Teen Board, and class officer. Mr. Casso will be graduating as valedictorian of his class with a GPA of 106.405. His plan is to continue his education in the Business Honors Program at the University of Texas at Austin.

Elizabeth Cortez
Elizabeth Cortez is a senior at Smithson Valley High School, and a scholar finalist in the National Hispanic Recognition Program. She is also a member of National Honor Society, Spanish Club, is copy-editor for the school’s yearbook, and is also involved in AP courses. Apart from school, she enjoys spending time with family, friends, and her cat, Sebastian, as well as running or hiking, and art. Miss Cortez will be attending the University of Texas at Austin in the Liberal Arts Honors Program, and plans to major in English. She would like to pursue a career as a professor.

David Delgado
A senior at Antonian College Preparatory High School, David Delgado has been most involved with the Latin Club and National Honor Society. He has earned places in a state Latin competition in Reading Comprehension as well as in area competitions during the past three years. He plays guitar, reads, and runs for fun. Mr. Delgado plans to attend either Duke or Stanford University to study the geosciences or new sources of energy to help preserve the environment for future generations.

Caryn Jack
Caryn Jack is a senior at James Madison High School. She is a drum major for the Mighty Maverick Marching Band and also plays the flute. Miss Jack serves as historian for the National Honor Society and is a member of the PAL program, where she mentors two elementary school students. She is a Worthy Advisor of The International Order of the Rainbow for Girls and serves as Grand Choir Director. A National Merit Commended Scholar, she plans to attend Trinity University next year to major in English, minor in music, and become an English teacher.

Rebekah Kelman
Rebekah Kelman is a senior at Thomas Jefferson High School and will graduate valedictorian of her class. She is a member of the National Honor Society, a National Hispanic Scholar and an AP Scholar. Miss Kelman has competed in the Academic Decathlon as an Honors (A-team) student and has placed at several competitions, district and regionally. She has been involved in Interact, the Drama Club, senior class activities and photojournalism. As a co-op student, she works the second half of her school day. Miss Kelman plans to study electrical and computer engineering in the fall.

Veronica Landa
Veronica Landa will be graduating as a senior at Northside Health Careers High School, this spring. She traveled through Europe with the People to People Student Ambassador Program. Miss Landa has participated in the orchestra for seven years, has competed at UIL Orchestra, Solo/Ensemble competitions and been a part of the region orchestra. She competes in UIL academic events and in HOSA competitions plus co-founded a community service club at her school. Miss Landa plans to attend Rice University to work in the medical field due to experiences at Health Careers and a summer working in a research laboratory where she discovered how rewarding medicine can be.

Kelsey Luddeke
As senior at Marion High School, Kelsey Luddeke competes in many sports and has an understanding of the importance of academics. Ms. Luddeke has competed in volleyball, softball, track, and basketball in the past four years all while holding the number three spot in her class. In addition, she has been actively involved in the Marion FFA, BPA, German Club and serving as a class officer. She will attend the University of Texas at Austin and major in nursing. Ms. Luddeke’s goal is to
become a physician’s assistant in South Texas.

Hilda Rodriguez
Hilda Bernice Rodriguez is a senior at McCollum High School and has been involved in many organizations through her academic years. She is the layout editor of the school magazine, Brand It and will be competing in New York City for Business Professionals of America. Miss Rodriguez has also been the organizer of the nation wide events of Red Ribbon Week and Sober Roads to encourage a sober life for teenagers. She will attend the University of Texas at Austin and major in Bilingual Education and minor in Graphic Design because these two subjects are a passion in her life.

Annabelle Wilde
A native San Antonian, Annabelle Wilde will graduate from Winston Churchill High School. She has been actively involved in both dance and academics throughout high school. The study of languages is of special interest to her as she studies Latin, French, and Spanish and hopes to learn many more languages in the years to come. Miss Wilde intends to study linguistics, French, and possibly economics at Rice University next year. After graduation, she plans to be an English as a second language teacher or a French teacher.
